I'm a single disabled mother and therefore my daughter and I live with my parents. They do a lot for us and I would really like to get them a Christmas gift, even though I keep saying I'm not doing Christmas because there isn't money for it. I recieve assistance because I am unable to work(for now, I am working at getting better) - that is how I support my daughter and myself (as much as possible). I can only afford about $30 total, and even that is tight. My parents do so much for everyone else and are very close to us. Please help with some ideas ASAP.

Help your daughter to make them a Christmas ornament for them. You can use things you have around the house--construction paper, crayons, maybe a photo of her or of you and her if you have one you don't mind using in the project.

Another free thing you can do is bake them cookies or make a special desert they would like...even if you use their ingredients, the time you took to make it for them will be from you.

If you want to get them something more, make it a gift for both of them (which will allow you to get them something nicer than if you tried to get a gift for each). Maybe buy them a movie they'd both enjoy, or get them a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant so they can have a fun night out--something like that.

But most of all, don't let your lack of money turn Christmas into a downer for you and them. Make it clear that when you say you're not "doing Christmas" because of lack of money, you just mean your not doing gifts--and that you do want to Celebrate Christmas with them. There are so many fun, free things to do in the holiday season (going out to look at lights, singing Christmas songs, ect.)--and some of my favorite Christmases were ones where I didn't have a lot of money, but had a lot of joy. (And hey, before all the glitz and glitter, Christmas started in a stable...so maybe times where we don't have as much help us to celebrate it more truthfully).

Prepare for them a Christmas Breakfast. Or get a certificate for a brunch or Lunch at a resturant they like. Have your daughter make a beautiful Card for them. Buy a picture frame and put a picture of you and your daughter in it.

How about framing a nice family picture of all of you along with a handwritten prayer, poem or note of gratitude to them? They can display this in a place where it can be seen and it would be like getting a gift every day.
