Most people will say that you can't.

But I do believe there are certain things that will lower your risk, although they aren't, of course, guarantees.

All of these subjects are researchable, but due to time and space constraints (I don't want to give you information overload), I'll post a few basics.

* Safe, moderate exposure to natural sunlight. (Natural sunlight provides a form of Vitamin D that is impossible to replicate exactly.)

* Increase your intake of foods such as broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, which are known to have cancer fighting properties. Tomatoes and berries are good as well.

* Maintain a healthy weight. The obese are at a higher risk for cancer.

* Avoid over-processed foods and sodium nitrite, which is found in most processed meats. It is a known carcinogen.

Those are just a few basics... there is quite a wealth of information on this topic. Hope this got the ball rolling. :)

I believe that somewhere I did read that a low fat diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer. The other posters are correct in that there is a large genetic influence that you cannot control. I have heard that in some families the chances were so great that a female would get breast cancer that family members actually voluntarily had mastectomies to prevent this.

Don't wear a bra when you don't need to. If you can go without using deordant and use baby powder your better off. The manufacture's are putting something in the deordants that they never use to and it was in the news not to long ago that deordants can cause brest cancer. I refuse to use deordants today becuase there changing everything and not for the better. Also you can go online and read about what foods to eat to prevent cancer and there are many good ones out there.

You will hear a lot of bunk on this topic. In general, dietary habits are a very small influence, although alcohol consumption is probably a risk factors. Estrogen therapy (for birth control or menopausal symptoms) is a small risk factor as well.

There's nothing you can ingest that will lower your risk.

You can't. It's hereditary. Try to find some information about the discovery of gene that causes breast cancer. Nowadays you can know if you carry the gene.

Olive Oil and Similar Oils Lower Risk of Breast Cancer
Olive Oil and Similar Oils Lower Risk of Breast Cancer

Article date: 1998/05/06
A new study suggests olive oil and similar oils containing monounsaturated fats can reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer.
The six-year study conducted jointly by Swedish and American researchers suggests monounsaturated fat, the type found in olive, canola and nut oils can reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer, whereas polyunsaturated fat, commonly found in fish, corn, safflower, and sunflower oils has the opposite effect.

The study of 61,471 Swedish women between the ages of 40 and 76 correlated their breast cancer risk with the amount and type of fats in their diet. Results of the study were published in the January 12 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

For each additional 10 grams of monounsaturated fat eaten, a woman's breast cancer risk was estimated to drop by 45%. In contrast, each extra five grams of polyunsaturated fat would increase her breast cancer risk by 69%. Past studies in animals have shown that monounsaturated oils lowered the risk of breast cancer. In addition, studies from Spain, Greece and Italy have shown high olive oil use correlated with low breast cancer risk. The authors of this study acknowledge more research needs to be done to precisely measure the effects of increasing monounsaturated fat consumption before major dietary changes are recommended.

"As the authors acknowledge, this study is not conclusive, because in Sweden there is a high correlation between polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, and one cannot separate the two completely," said Michael Thun, MD, director of analytical epidemiology for the American Cancer Society. "In other words, women who eat more monounsaturated fat also eat more polyunsaturated fat." He adds that substituting olive oil for margarine and other vegetable oils may be a good idea since, in addition to its potential for lowering breast cancer risk, it improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol, which can lower the risk of heart disease.

The American Cancer Society recommends eating a well-balanced diet, consisting of a variety of foods which can protect against cancer. A good diet consists of plenty of high fiber and low fat foods, as well as lots of fruits and vegetables.
