To understand why he kept cracking corn, you would have to know what that means. Some song experts think it means "cracking the bottle of corn whiskey", in other words, drinking. If that is true, then he kept cracking corn because it gave him a buzz, and since he was a slave, and his master died after being thrown off a horse, Jimmy was pretty darn happy, and he kept drinking. Wouldn't you, after all those years of slavery???
