I'd like a medium sized dog that doesn't shed too much and would be good for in the house.

I think you should get a beagle. Beagles aren't small and they aren't big, so they're medium. Also they don't shed too much, and you never have to take them to get their fur cut! Just their nails :). They're very good in the house once they're potty trained, but you might wanna be careful and teach them not to dig in your garden, cause ours was ruined in 5 days! Plus the other neighbor's....but other than that, they're wonderful! Some are a bit noisy and bark, but that's just some. Mine doesn't ever bark, just every once in awhile. They're very friendly, and also very affectionate. What I love about them is that they're extremely intelligent! My dog learned a trick when she was a puppy in about 5 minutes. And now ,even when she's 4, i taught her a trick in about...well, 5 minutes for...a week, so 35 minutes. She's a bit older, heh. They love to eat though, so you'd have to make sure you don't gve them too much. THey're playful and energetic, so they won't just lie down and do nothing. They're not very good gaurd dogs, so if that's whta you're looking for, don't count on them chasing away burglars. They're not very good with small animals like rats or cats unless they're trained to be or they were with the cats since they were kittens, and they have hunting instincts. They love to be in the wild and go for walks. oh wow, i wrote too much. But anyways, in my opinion, I say go for a beagle!

That is good that you can list some things you know about its setting and its needs versus yours. Keep naming things you could see as an issue, like....do you have a yard or will you have to walk it? Do you have stairs? Will you have to carry it (think about weight). Poodles do not shed and they are known to be very friendly, very smart, and easy to house-break. They look like they love you and stare right in the eyes of their master with adoration. A standard poodle is about 50 pounds though, and tall. Look up the website for The American Kennel Club and it will tell you all these things about a hundred breeds...which shed, which are dumb, which tend to be stubborn, which need lots of exercise, which can't stand being left alone, etc etc. Have fun reading about them and looking at photos of them!

I suggest adopting a dog. If you go to www.petfinder.com , you can do a search of "medium sized" dogs in your area. If you prefer a dog that usually doesn't shed a lot of hair, I would mainly look at short hair breeds, or poodle mixes.

One of the most civilized and non-allergenic dogs you'll find is the Shizou or Shi-Tzou or... it has lots of spellings. But it can be trained to use a kitty-litter box, barely sheds, and it is extremely good in the house. And cute.

You could try a breed recommender like the one here: http://www.glowdog.com/bestdog/ I used it and it was helpful to get a general idea of personality and maintenance of different dog breeds.
