I like this guy. He compliments me a lot and he kinda hints at me and stares at me. But...?

he hangs out a lot with this girl who likes him. she's a jap. i don't like her. i went to her bat mitzvah a couple years ago but i didnt even like her then...how can i make him like me more without making him think i'm "desperate" or like i'm trying to hard...btw we're in ninth grade..
