It's SOP.It's better to do it that way. If he came in announced someone would sure try to kill him. I happened to have friends over there I would hate to see killed because he came in with a huge fan fare!

First, should we let all the insurgents know Rumsfeld are coming, time and place? Isn't that INSANE if you let them know?

I'm not sure that "afraid" is the right word. It's more like "cautious." If he were so afraid, why should he even come there, in the first place?

You do know that at this minute this place in not safe. The military protects any official to its UTMOST. So this might include planning a "surprise visit." Maybe you're right, the army is "not strong enough"....to protect people in UNsurprised visits.

Look, I am glad he made those imperative Iraq visits since they are part of his JOB showing that he care and is not afraid.

Hopefully, you do understand now.

Oh, I get it. A trite attempt at insinuation. Ok we'll bite, but now that you brought it up, lets dig into it a little deeper. You follow sports? Do you know what stats are, you know statistics, records? Who hit the longest homer or the most. The most in a season, in a career. Pitching percentages, earned run average. Do you know why we keep records? Because we like to compare and see how todays player is relative to todays game. Any player, any sport. It's called history in any other form. OK, military genius, when was the last time a country entered, occupied, and turned a government around with as little military loss and civilian loss for that matter in history? When? When has any country occupied another and turned the government over to them months later, when? We all go about our lives and just refuse to recognize for whatever reason that a war is going on. Why was it that we could enter and rebuild Japan and Germany after WWII and they now both demonstrate a vibrant individual and unique democracy and we're having so much trouble in Iraq. The Iraqi's?You think the Iraqi's are behind the insurgency? Which one's? The Arabic Iraqi, the Kurdish, the Turkmen. You don't have a slight inclination that Iran on one side and Syria on the other, don't want a democracy between them. No, that can't be it. People are funny, half the population here couldn't point to Iraq on a map five years ago and the other half still can't today and everyone is a military genius now and convinced we're losing. let me explain what losing is, losing is leaving your equipment behind, and running like hell out of the country, like we did in Viet Nam, oh and who cares about the 2 million people killed after we left there. Hey, it wasn't us! have you ever been in a concert and the band sucked, but your date was into it so you just stood there and played along. Thats what half the people that oppose the war are doing. They have no idea what the heck is going on but, its cool to oppose it cause man its hip, it makes you look deep and involved. Please, disinvolve yourself and sit back and watch the dems screw this whole thing up and realize we are the dumb kids with the hockey helmuts on and never get to drive the bus or decide where its going. And stop being subtle, its not working!

All visits to combat zones by high ranking officials (military or government) are surprise to protect them and the troops they are visiting. He's not afraid, he's smart. If the enemy knew that Rummy was visiting Camp Liberty, they'd point every rocket in the city to that post and kill a lot of troops. Confidentiality is for our protection.

A surprise is something unexpected, unscheduled or not planned. Just because something was a"surprise" means someone is afradi. If someone threw a surprise party or visited you by surprise, does that mean that they are scared?

Another point is, just because you protect yourself and the people around you doesn't mean you're afraid. A gram of prevention is always better than an ounce of cure.

Don't be shallow dude.

Security most likely. Our troops have enough to handle without prior warnings given to those engaged in the Iraqi civil war who would love to off Rummy.
