It is like a barcode. The greater variety of products you have the longer must your codes be. Humans at first had only one name of one syllable which, as populations grew became two or more syllables. Further population growth lead to the rise of the last name. Now, not only do we have last names, we have increasingly complex first and last names. When is the last time you heard of a newborn being named Jane? Or Ralph. These names do not allow humans to effectively identify each other with enough precision. So we have names like Shantilla, Britney, Courtney. We also see a rise of double-barreled last names such as Rodham-Clinton.
