Cause he isn't necessarily all-loving. The Christians say he is, but they mean he is all-loving only to them. They want him to be all-hating when it comes to other religions.
If there were a God, I doubt very much that he would obey the Christians' view of things.

He doesn't. This is an example of the false doctrines that crept into the church from paganism and is a major reason why there are so many atheists. If I believed it I might be an atheist too. God is just and where is the justice if Cain gets 6000 more years in the fire for killing one person than someone like Hitler? This doctrine has driven more people from Christ than has lead them to Him. The punishment is eternal separation from God, not eternal torture. There's more but this isn't the time or place for a Bible study.

Why do we send murderers, rapists, thieves to jail? Because they have done wrong. The true key to salvation is repentance. Paul said to the Romans in Chapter 7 verse 7 "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lus, except the law had said, Thou shall not covet." I could sit and quote lots more stuff but I don't think I have enough room here instead if you care to listen to an explanation for your question you can visit http://wayofthemaster.com/audiolessons.shtml and listen to Hell's Best Kept Secret.

Starflame has it right, the second death.

HELL IN KJV
One Hebrew word “sheol” is rendered hell. Definition; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranian retreat), grave, hell, pit. Three Greek words are rendered hell; geenna, hades, and tartaroo. Definition of geenna; a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment: - hell. Definition of hades; properly unseen, that is, “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: - grave, hell. Definition of tartaroo; (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment: - cast down to hell. Tartaroo is used only one place II Pet.2:4.
Christ teaching the Pharisees in Luke 16:19-31 shows us a separation from God is truly what hell is. The “water” is symbolic for God’s Spirit and love. The word “tormented” means distressed in the Greek, not torture. The “fire” is symbolic for the shame and desire not to be separated from God.
So all who die the first death of the flesh return to God Ecc.12:6-7, but on which side of the gulf do they end up?
Hell is not eternal but is done away with in Rev.20:14-15, called both the second death and lake of fire. This second death is non-existence, for death and hell and those not written in the book of life. This second death or lake of fire is like fat drippings that fall into the fire. Just a poof of smoke into non-existence.
Psa.37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
In my mind what’s worse yet is no memory of you, no tears will be shed for you like you never existed.
Rev.21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
So hell is a separation from God and is not eternal torture or burning. Eventually hell will be done away with or passed away and also some souls. Like fat drippings in the fire, a poof of smoke into non-existence, the second death.

Ahaha I love kim c's answer, which is ultimately true. If you want it to sound non-evil, you can think of God wanting us to be with God again, hence the damnation.

Loving enough to provide us with a way to acheive eternal life with Him.
But He put a time eliment into the mix.
You have to accept His Son Jesus Christ as Savior while you are ALIVE.

As Creator? His sandbox. His rules.

Listen, little floating pig. God did not damn any human. He gave every human a choice. He warned about the wrong one, a million times over. But, my future bacon, the people wanted to do what they wanted. It was the desire of things not considered righteous, that misleads. Ready for the skillet?

Because he's a strict God. Has to keep everyone in line. I guess.

Hell if I know, seems a bit extreme to me as well.

Well, first off, God is God and being God he has every right to do as he sees fit.

That having been said--it's YOUR choice whether or not you go to hell. Believe on Christ and be saved, and you don't go to hell, simple as that.

Little FYI here: The devil will be cast in hell eventually. He doesn't rule hell. He's going to be tormented in hell.
