Is it something that I need on my computer? I just wonder if it's something someone in my family installed. It is saying I need to update it but first I want to know what it is.

Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive. You should update it if you intend to keep your system protected and then scan it after updating.

Windows Defender is Microsoft version of an antispyware program. You can only download from Microsoft if you have a valid Windows platform. Windows Defender is really pure junk.

Here are some free excellent antispyware programs that I use.

http://www.grisoft.com download their free for home use version. If you wish to purchase, you will get auto updates and a guard in the tray. I have the purchased version, and removed for the free version. Reason is that the guard uses to much resources and I can update on a manual basis.

http://www.superantispyware.com Download their free for home use version. This program is excellent at finding spyware usually missed by others.

Both of the above scan all 271,875 objects in my system.

You can also install http://www.lavasoft.com Download their free home for personal use, Ad-adware Se Personal.
