Just say she met him at the mall. That's what my friend from school did, but we found out at the end they met online instead. They seen each other in real life before a few times already after she told us the truth.

she could say she met him from a friend or something

It is very common these days to meet people over the net and your friend should be honest about it. There is nothing to be embarrassed about..
