Simiarah, I agree with you English is the official language of our Country. Unfortunately you have two extreme positions. Those who feel threaten by others speaking their native language, and those who want to make another stupid law prohibiting speaking another language.
Understandably, speaking, writing and reading another language is a credit to the person who masters any foreign language. Why is Spanish, French, German and many other languages taught in our schools. Just for the sake of brain food. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans who take these classes never make use of this new skill.
I hope a language teacher reads my position. As part of a student.s final grade, the student should be able to pass an interview with a person who's language he or she has taken in class. A paper should be written and reading out loud to this examiner.
There is a position of some scholars that prior countries who peoples spoke many languages have an allegiance to these countries and consequently culture of the country they live in will lack unity and will destroy itself.

English should legally be the official language of the United States. No other country would allow people to move there from all over the world, and bring their own language, and demand that all business be conducted in their language. America is what it is today because of immigration. I understand that people want to come to America for a better life, but they should be willing to learn the language, or go back where they came from. There is nothing more frustrating than walking into a place like Wal Mart in the United States and asking a question only to find out the sales person does not speak English. How frustrating!

I believe that the United States should never have an official language, because it will be taking away a part of the diverse culture that we have today. I think that English will always be the language of the majority of the US population, but around 20% of the population don't speak English as their first language. 60% of those people speak Spanish. If English was the official language, it would be like taking away a right from that 20% of the population. Many people that I know would be offended in a way (I know many people whose first language is Spanish). They, along with I, believe that every language should have the same amount of respect and treatment as English.

America is the land of the free. Just because the majority of the people speak English (which may not be much longer, Spanish is increasing) does NOT mean that that should be our official language. After all, we're not exactly free if we tell people what language they have to speak. It wouldn't be fair to all the hispanics and other immigrants who came here for a better life and would be forced to learn another language so they can make a living in this country.

When did they change the official language of the US............... All publications are printed in English, TV programs are in English, music is sung in English and all I ever hear is people speaking English - I just don't know why a person would think anything else. Just because we have tons of immigrants here (legal and illegal) does not change the fact - we all speak English.
If I were to live in a foreign country - they would expect me to speak their language and I would do everything I could to speak the language of that country. Legal immigrants must learn English to become American citizens. If illegal immigrants feel they are 'above the law' then they need to return where they came from and leave us alone. We did not ask them to come here!

The United States has no reliable language on the federal stage, however English is the de facto countrywide language. This implies that English is probably the most spoken and approved language within the US, however there's no reliable language. I take into account listening to approximately a regulation they have been seeking to move making English the reliable language, however I bet it failed.

Does it matter ? Who cares which is the official language ?
What do we achieve with that ?
Besides, for that, the english speakers must learn the language before making it an official language. It is already a shame to see that practically none of them speaks correct english

English is the official language of this country and was voted such by the First Continental Congress. The other choice was German. English was voted the official language by only a few votes since many of the Senators and Representatives were Germans, of German descent, or reperesented German communities.

Yes, this nation is very diverse. It would be very helpful if we had a language to unite us. I also think that Americans who don't know English should be offered lessons so they can communicate with us.
