Because its more nationally rooted than other religions since their origin was part of what defined them as Jews. Judaism roots into Isreal so many Jews feel that if you are not from Jewish ancestry, you are not Jewish and you cannot just "become" one. If your acestors did not wander the desert for 40 yrs or not part of other hardships of the Jews, then to them you just arent Jewish.
In other words, God gave His promise, not to the whole world but to Isreal and you just cant claim His promise just because you want to. This isnt the thought of all Jews but one of the main reasons they dont recruit.

Well, if you are a Christian, aren't you taking up a religion propagated by a Jew, from the tribe of Judah whose name is Jesus? Of course, up to date, majority of the Jews rejects the faith brought to them by Jesus. They are still waiting for someone who has all the quality of Jesus but not somebody born in the manger. When this comes, he would be their Messiah. So, put it the other way, if all the Jews are followers of Christ, what a huge group of people following the religion promoted by the Jews. If you are neither a follower of Judaism nor a Christian, you are lucky but your ending is whereabout or unknown. Both Jews and Christians believe they go back to God. In fact, if you are a follower of anybody you are already converted by him who is a person of any race. Say a Buddhist, an Indian, Islam, an Arabian, and so on. But let me add a word, in the past, an Indian or Arabian was never known by those term, because there were no such countries known by India or Arab then. But the Jews were known as the Jews after their ancestors called themselves Israelites.

We do not look for converts because we believe that we are all G-d's children, and we all have different roles to fulfill in this world. We also believe that all moral people merit heaven, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.
If someone wants to convert to Judaism, we accept her or him with open arms! Judaism is not a matter of ethnicity, a bloodline, or a nationality. It is a way of life.
Our history states that Ruth was one of the most righteous women, and she was a convert. Her great-grandson was King David! The Jewish Messiah will come from David, who was a descendant of a convert.

I may be wrong on this but if I am not mistaken, Jewish law declares that for one to be a Jew, his/her mother had to have been a Jew. It is dictated by genetics and bloodline. Children of Israel is a literal meaning. In this case converts aren't considered true Jews. I believe in modern times however, the Jewish communities are accepting converts into their society. It's very strict and strenuous from what I've heard (hearsay), but it is becomming more and more accepted.

Because they feel like they are God's chosen and their religion is based on hundreds of years of heritage being passed down from generation to generation. Outsiders tend to not be seen as being able to follow the laws laid down. It is an arduous task to become a converted Jew as most of their teachings start from a very young age. It would be difficult for an adult to completely absorb all of the ritual, law, and tradition that goes along with it.

I love all the non Jewish opinions. The answer actually is according to us (Jews) you do not have to be Jewish to enter "heaven" you need to just live a good life. The only thing a Jew is supposed to do is lead example.

Its simple
according to Judaism one dose not need to be Jewish to go to "heaven" or be close to G-d. All one needs to do is try to be a good, moral and upstanding person.
when you believe that its not my way or the highway its easy to respect other peoples religions and you feel no need to go out and convert people.

It was decided by Rabbinical Council many many years ago that personalization would cease and that people should convert only because they wish to follow the example of Jews they meet and see in day to day life.
(IT IS WORKING! MANY DO INDEED JOIN THAT FAITH .)
