I'm traveling down to that area over my winter break from school. Is there anything special that happens down there? I've never been there before.

I'm talking specifically about the French Quarter/Bourbon street. I hear there are fireworks as well. How many people show up around this area?

"Yes there are going to be plenty of festivities going on. There is probably going to be no less than 10 murders take place. At least 50 carjackings, 150 pick pockets will score successfully. 75 innocent people will be mugged and assaulted. And a countless number of people will have unprotected sex and acquire some type of STD.
Come on down and have a good time!!!"

That's my kind of party! :)

Every year they have a local New Year's Eve countdown, where they drop "Baby New Year" (not a real baby, of course) from a tower at midnight. It's kind of like the whole ball drop thing in NYC. This takes place near Jackson Square in the French Quarter and there is plenty of partying to be had in the area all night long.

Have fun and post again if you have other questions :)

PS - you added a question about how many people show up in the French Quarter. There have always been tons. Perhaps there will be a bit less this year than before Katrina, but I'm sure there will still be a large crowd -- in fact it will probably be better than before Katrina because you won't get trampled by the usual sea of people.

I used to work on one of the clubs on Bourbon St. and New Years in the French Quarter is AWESOME. The best New Year's Eve of my life... 2004. So many people in a great mood, all open, all in a party mood, uninhibited, you'll meet plenty of people to make out with and most probably even have some good sex with!! The vibe is euphoric and tons of fun. It's definitely worth it. It is incredible and a great life time experience.
