The Eustachian tube runs up to the inner ear from the back of the throat, to equalize the pressure there with the atmospheric pressure outside. This is usually accomplished one time, not repeatedly..... Suggesting you are not getting a full equalization. Perhaps your present cold condition has caused a partial blockage to prevent this process to take place. Having a sore throat has a direct effect on this tube.

The sound comes from air moving from one passage to another. It's the same thing when you're in an airplane (or, if you're like me, you scuba dive). The difference in pressure in the air space in your lungs, the air space in your ear canal, and your nasal passages can cause pain. The "popping" is when air moves from one space to another - it's called equalizing.
When you're sick, the air passages can get clogged and pressure builds. So the popping or crackling is totally normal - it's your ears trying to equalize.
You can help by yawning, stretching your mouth, and swallowing.

It sounds as if the tubes in your ears may be involved in your illness.
Sometimes when we sneeze we can end up blowing moisture into the tubes in our ears that join our ears, nose and eyes together.
You may end up needing an antibiotic to clear this up.
Meanwhile try to not hold your mouth closed when you sneeze but be sure to sneeze straight into a piece of tissue.
Blowing your nose one side at a time, you also run a risk of blowing that stuff into your ear tubes. . .Estacion Tubes (sp) so be sure to blow both sides of your nose at one time.
