I can't remember whether Trident is sugar free, but that's the only kind (sugar free) I chew, and that's what I recommend for you. And I'm not clear whether you chew the same piece for three hours or several pieces over a three hour time period. If the former is correct, then you have nothing to worry about at all. If the latter is correct, then I DEFINITELY would switch to a sugar free brand, that is, unless you particularly like going to a dentist to get fillings and root canals. I find chewing gum is better keeping me awake when driving than even my very strong Italian Roast espresso coffee or cokes. Just minimize the sugar and all else is fine. God Bless you.

Chewing gum can help cause cavities in the teeth because of the sugar. A little gum chewing cannot be bad ...but when some people chew or "pop" gum, they chew with their jaw crooked and that can lead to TMJ in the jaw area. TMJ is not easily corrected and can lead to pain when talking or eating.

If you chew gum with Xylitol (I think Ice Breakers has it), then chewing gum is actually GOOD for you. My dentist recommends that I chew gum for this reason, but I'm not a gum chewer. :-)
Choose gum w/o sugar, be sure to brush and floss normally, and as long as your jaw doesn't ache... I don't see anything harmful about it.

It gives some people (like me) headaches, and of course if you don't brush your teeth it could possibly lead to dental problems just as any other food can, but on the whole I don't think it's a serious health issue.

Yes i am a doctor, if You eat too much gum in too little time then your liver and your pancrease will start to get infected. and pretty soon (14-18 months) you will feel drowsy and start to fall down to the ground. so dont eat too much gum, any kind!

well if you have mercury in your teeth yes it is bad for you. The gum stirs up the mercury in your teeth and can cause problems medically for you in your future. If you have popping in your jaw (TMJ) that will not help you any either.
