Ok, im looking for revolver - six shooter. I know very little about small arms handguns and ammo. Now i want a high caliber or enough caliber to do some damage. but not a huge hand cannon style, caliber gun. i want sort of a wild west nostalgia style gun. with but with good modern tech, and a higher power caliber gun. im not rich either so $300-500 is about my price range, but cheaper than that would be great too. dual action ( pull the trigger and fire, not cock the hammer then pull the trigger to fire, style) is a must. any ideas you gunnists out there? i have email displayed in my profile if i left anything out that is needed to make a decision. thanks

The Ruger GP100 357 mag. would be one of the best choices for you. The price range is right and you can shoot 38 spl for target and use the 357 for home protection. (personally I would use the 38 spl. for home defense as well).

Ruger is the strongest bar none on the market now a days.

S&W has been using powder metal parts for some time now and the system is not as strong as it use to be.

I work at an indoor range and the Ruger out last the S&W in the rental case.

Be safe and enjoy which ever brand and style of revolver you buy.

Bound's hubby here:

As "Boker" has mentioned, you are seeking is a "double action" revolver. However, modern "double action" revolvers do not have the appearnace of a "wild west nostalgia style gun". You will have to reach a compromise here.

Personally, I prefer Smith & Wesson revolvers, and I would suggest a medium framed (L or K) in .357 Magnum, but such a revolver would run about $700 (MSRP), which is out of your league. I would consider a Colt revolver in .357 next, but they are relatively discontinued, and sold at a premium.

While I am not a proponent of the Ruger "double action" revolvers, I do like their Single Action line. With the exception of the .44 Magnum, you can get into a "Blued" carbon steel Blackhawk for about $500, the maximum of your price range. You can get either a .30 Carbine, .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum, or .45 Long Colt in this revolver.

You really did not state what you wanted the revolver for: hunting, defense, or target. But since you have a concern for it's ability to inflict damage, I would presume you are seeking it for either hunting or personal defense. For hunting, get a Ruger Blackhawk. For self-defense, save a couple extra hundred dollars, and get a Smith & Wesson .357!

Good luck!

A .357 Magnum revolver (which also shoots .38 Special) sounds like the caliber you are looking for. The price range is 'iffy.' Try Ruger, Taurus or a used Smith & Wesson to stay within that price range.

Uberti makes the weapons Cimmeron and Taylor sell too... Cimmeron and Taylor weapons will finished greater helpful and have nicer timber and over-all greater healthful. Colts start up around $1200 for a clean third era gun. Cimmerons and Taylors and Ubertis will run 0.5 of that-or much less. Ruger's modern-day Vaquero is lighter than the unique version.. it has some improvments over the Colt.. coil springs, the cylinder will spin in the two course for loading and it has a pass bar protection. Blackhawks are lots heavier than the Colt framed pistols and are made to shield very heavy costs and massive heavy bullets. I shop a .357 Cimmeron -Uberti Colt clone... it is so on the element of the real element I dont concepts it in any respect. Shoots low like a real Colt... you load one pass one then load 4 greater and enable the hammer down purely like a real Colt.. and if I drop it from the pony I wont cry like i might if it became right into a $1500 Colt

I would say you are in the market for a used smith &wesson in either 38 special or 357 mag. good used smiths can be found for around $300-$400 and id rather have a used smith than a new taurus. Also please note that 38 smith &wesson special calibre is not the same as 38 special. It is ussually recomended for home defense to load a 357 with 38 special +p ammo.

Look into the Ruger Redhawk line of pistols, maybe the vaquero line of rugers as well. Caliber decision will ultimately be yours to make as YOU are the one behind the trigger, not anyone else.
EDIT:
Altho the Vaquero is a single action, it is one of the most accurate "cowboy" style 6 shooters on the modern market today.

Sounds like you're describing a .357 Magnum. Go with something with popular, affordable, readliy-available ammo. There are a lot of Ruger fans out there; I like their autos, but I prefer S&W in a revolver. Taurus also makes some fine revolvers.

they are all right Ruger black hawk 357 then you can shoot 38 specials cheap and low recoil. but you can go up to a 357 mag when you feel ready.. price is right they make a Vaquero ( splling ) that is perfect for cowboy shooting. www.uberti.com is another source but more expensive.
