Thats the beauty of making gingerbread houses....there are no rules for what candies you use to decorate it. Hard candies and gummy candies can be melted to make stain glass looking windows. Shredded coconut is useful for snow and can be dyed other colors for leaves or grass. Licorice sticks and rope are useful for trim. Jawbreakers can make a nice snowman. Go to a candy store and start looking at the candies with an eye for what you want to create. Its all about creativity.

Red hots look good. Also, the red and white round mints, licorice, lifesavers, or whatever you want. Just go to the store and pick the ones you think would add to the way you want your gingerbread house to look. Usually, any small candy will work. Have fun and Good Luck! Merry Christmas!

"Rockets" from Hallowe'en, Christmas Smarties or M&M's, licorice that you can pull apart, different coloured frosting (obviously), gummy candies, sour candies, sprinkles, marshmallows, strips of Kit Kat bars, chocolate chips... the sky's the limit, really! My friend crushed up candy canes to make a 'gravel' walk way for her little one's house!!

Hard candies, like your Grandmother kept in her candy bowl on the coffee table. You can get them at the grocery store in a bag. Not too expensive

I used a kit that had Sweettarts, Runts, and Nerds. I think it was a Willy Wonka model.
