Is there any word processing software available for OS X that you can open Doc files with? I know you can get Word for mac but I'm hoping theres something freeware I can use.

I have no experience with TextEdit that Dominic F mentioned, but you might want to look at Open Office, which does a fairly good job of rendering MS office documents.

You have to remember though, that even different versions of MS Word format word documents differently. If the official application can't format it in a standard way, then third party apps don't stand much of a chance.

you can open word .doc files with TextEdit that comes free with your Mac, but you may lose some of the formatting.

in case you have Microsoft workplace for Mac put in or OpenOffice for Mac put in or iWork put in... then, sure. i might choose for OpenOffice, because of the fact that is loose or Microsoft workplace in case you could arise with the money for it, so which you get one hundred% compatibility. iWork is a lame selection, because of the fact (like OpenOffice) it has basically ninety 9% compatibility, yet in assessment to OpenOffice, it costs funds.
