I have a HDMI TV (Vizio) with 1 HDMI input, a Direct TV box with one HDMI outout. I want to spend under 1,000 on a home thetre system - any suggestions?

That is not too far fetched at all. With a budget like that, I would
go with seperate components as opposed to a HTIB system...

Here's what I would suggest to you:

Receiver - Onkyo (TX-SR604 or 603X), or Pioneer (VSX-1016TXV)
DVD Player - Pioneer Elite universal (DV-45A or 46A)
Speakers - Hsu Research (VT-12 system)
Powered Subwoofer - Hsu Research (STF-1)

This is a great system that I frequently recommend to those
whom want a nice home theater system for about $1k.

Suggestion: DO NOT buy a home theater in a box. And save the HDMI connection for later. Read on....

Connect the Satellite box using component video cables (Red Blue and Green RCA cables). Use an optical cable or digital coaxial cable to connect the audio from the satellite box to your home theater amp. You can also run audio RCA cables from the box to the tv so you don't have to always use your home theater system to get audio.

As for a DVD player, make sure you get one that has HD upconversion. As you may or may not know, DVDs are not HD quality. When they are displayed on an HDTV they will not fill the whole screen correctly unless your DVD player has HD upconversion. You can find these players for under 100 bucks at best buy or wal-mart. The reason why I said to save the HDMI port is because you will need it to connect your DVD player to your TV because the HD upconversion function typically only works using the HDMI connection. Use another optical cable or digital coaxial cable to connect the audio from the DVD player to your home theater amp.

As far as an amp goes, don't spend too much money. A $300 dollar amp should do the trick. Just make sure it has dolby digital surround sound and includes the optical or digital coaxial inputs on the rear.

Speakers are the same...any set that cost $300 dollars or more should sound great. Don't forget to get a powered subwoofer with your system to really enhance the sound. This is the main difference between the sound that comes out of your tv and the sound that comes out of your home theater system.

And I can't stress this last poing enough...Don't spend the money on expensive cables. It will be SO HARD to notice a difference in quality versus low cost cables. Buy your cabling at Wal-mart and buy the cheap stuff, it will work fine.

Try the Onkyo HT-S907
XM Ready 7.1-channel home theater system with HDMI digital video switching and upconversion.

I like my Sony Home Theater system. I paid around $400.00 for it.

I agree with Xenon ... You can go to Crutchfield.com and get them to spec out a system for you as well for your budget...

Good luck

I don't agree w/ saving your hdmi input -- you've got it, so you should use it!
