I have 5 days to kill in Brazil just after New Year, and am looking for the most amazing beaches and a hippie type feel away from tourism - I've already excluded Morro de Sao Paolo. Any suggestions?

Please don't bother suggesting anywhere else... it'sone or the other, and I wanna know which, and why!

Well, you cant really go wrong with either one of these places since they are both gorgeous. However, if you want the less touristic place, you should go to Trancoso - hands down!

Still, I think you will be bored after 3 days there. Unless you like to just hang out at the beach for 5 days straigth. There is not much to do other than go to different beaches and lay in the sun.

Anyway, enjoy your trip and have a good time in Brazil.

I would go to Trancoso:
Trancoso is a small fishermen's town in the northeastern part of the vast Brazilian cost. Surrounded by untouched tropical forests with Turquoise bays and white sand beaches, Trancoso is a delightful backdrop for kite and wind surfing, snorkeling.

Also you would need to fly in Salvador do Bahia which could be fun!

I have never been, but heard they are both amazing and rich in ecotourism options. Do you really have to choose? Travellers who come to Porto Seguro and surroundings usually visit them both.
Trancoso is slightly more well-known. It used to be more off-the-beaten-track but has become more hip - yet it still far from the hustle of Salvador, Ilhéus or Porto Seguro. I'd say it would be what most of my Brazilian friends would recommend.
