All domesticated dogs come from either wolves or dingos - or a combination of the two. Since they are predators and need to hunt for food they try and mask their scent from their prey. Anything they find - usually that is quite pungent - or natural to the environment they are hunting in is a potential source to roll in. Think of it as doggy camouflage. Domesticated dogs still have the instinct to mask their scent even though they don’t have to hunt for prey.

It could be one of two things. Either they are putting their scent on it so they can mark their territory or find it again later, or they are rolling over it to "kill" it. Sometimes dogs will treat bones or other toys like their "prey" and shake it or roll on it as if they are attacking or "killing" it.

PS to you people, this person didn't mean the dog's own bones!

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/KwWxA

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

the only thing I could ever figure out is, dogs love rolling on things that smell, I think the bone gets a peculiar smell and they like rolling on it. Why they love rolling on stinky things, haven't figured that out yet ;-)

My dog does that..... she also rolls on every remote control in the house and hides them. They put their scent on them so everyone knows the bone belongs to them. Same for my TV remote I guess.

If you notice they start to roll on them they start with a place just behind the eye and the rub all the way down the body. There are sent glands just behind the eye They are marking their property. It's normal
