What type of canoe or kayak would I get for this. I'm not planning on doing any white water kayaking serious stuff. Just want some exercise and live near Lake Michigan.

I'd rent a sit-on-top sea kayak. They're stable (I've been with beginners in 25 mph winds and they were like a rock), track well (they go in a straight line unlike canoes and expedition sea kayaks and whitewater kayaks), and are usually the main type of boat folks now rent out to beginners because they're so safe to use. I rented one at Peninsula State Park in Wisconsin (in the summer of course) and paddled on Lake Michigan, and it was a blast.

If you want to know more about boating, there's lots of workshops you can take (and groups you can join):

Here's info about where to get boats, outfitters, etc in the Great Lakes: http://www.great-lakes.net/tourism/rec/canoe.html#state

Have fun!

I say a kayak and if its mid summer you can do a sit on top which is more stable and does not require you to learn how to roll. I have paddled plus or minus five miles from the causeway at Charlevoix and found it challenging but doable. Michigan is big water so don't do this if you are not experienced and confident..and don't go alone. Otherwise, I can also suggest that you paddle Round Lake which is inland from the big Lake at Charlevoix. Its a big ride the water is less rough and susceptible to wind (the enemy of kayaks) and you can go long distances. I built my confidence paddling there before I went out on to the big M. Lake Michigan is cold year round, the deepr the water the colder it gets, the wind blows most of the time and the beaches tend to be pretty rocky making landing a little tricky. Its great fun but respect that piece of water and the bigger the group you have the safer it is. Good paddling dude.
