A Muslim is one who follows Islam. An arab is a race like Puerto rican or Chinese. An Arab can be a Christian or any other religion not necessarily a Muslim. Muslims don't have to be arab either. Many white americans and very many africans are muslims. Your textbook is wrong for using it interchangeably. Glad you caught it though!
Peace

Muslim= Someone who follows the religion of Islam. Arab, however, is not a religion. An Arab is a person from the general Arabian area *also called the Middle East) other than people from Israel, Jordan or Turkey (I think those are the countries). Most of those countries have Islam as a national religion, so people often refer to the as the Islamic nations or the Muslim nations.

A Muslim is a person who practices the religion of Islam.
An Arab is a person from the Middle East or North Africa, descended from Abraham's son Ishmael.
Jews, the other major Middle East dwellers, are descended from Abraham's son Isaac.
Most Arabs are Muslim, but not all. However many people of other nationalities have converted to Islam.

Islam is the name of the religion Muslims follow. Most Arabs are Muslims, but some are Christians.
The Egyptians Christians are Coptic, and the Lebanese Christians are Maronites.

Arabs are a people and Muslims are the people of the religion Islam.

People are confused about this. Abraham wasn't a muslim. Hagar wasn't a muslim and neither was Ishmael.

Muslims are of the Islam religion that was started by Mohammed who was and Arab and believed to be a descendent of Ishmael.

Islam is the faith, Muslims are the followers of that faith and Arabs are a people who can be Muslim, Christians what ever they choose to be. Arab is not a religion neither is Muslim.

The word "Islam" means peace and submission to the Will of the only God worthy of being worshipped. This peace is contentment with yourself and your surroundings that could only be achieved by willfully submitting to God, obeying what He commands and abstaining from what He forbids.

Who Is Allah?

Allah is the name in Arabic for the "One God". Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, Planner and Organizer. He is the only deity that has the right to be worshipped (i.e. praying, supplicating, fasting, etc.). In Islam, the belief in the One God cannot be separated from the acts of worshipping the One God. In other words, it is not enough to simply think you believe in the Oneness of the Creator but that belief must be affirmed by your statement and actions. Example, it would negate ones belief in the Oneness of the Creator if he directs his worship to a man (or any of the other created things).

Who Is a Muslim?

One who practices the 5 pillars of Islam and believes in the fundamentals of faith. One can become a Muslim by saying; "Ashadhu An Laa ilaha illa Allah, wa ashadhu anna Muhammad ar-rasulullah." This means, " I bear witness that no deity has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Final Messenger." All Prophets preceding Muhammad were Muslims. This includes Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and Jesus. Is there a doubt that these Prophets did not submit their will to the Creator? Allah says in the Qur’an:

" Abraham was neither a Jew or a Christian, but he was a true Muslim and he was not of the idolaters." The Holy Qur'an, Chapter 3, Verse 67.

It is important to note that other religions are derived from the name of a place or a person. Examples of this are: Judaism is derived from the tribe of Judah, Hinduism is from the Indus River, Buddhism is from Goutam Buddha and Christianity is from Jesus Christ. Islam is the only revealed religion and way of life that directly attaches its worshippers to the servitude of the Creator.

Islam is the religion and muslim are the followers whether it is arab or american or indian or russian or japanese or anypne.....

:) Yeah, unforunately, it can be confusing sometimes.

Well, you can always acquaint the word "Muslim" with "Islam" and vice versa. Islam is the name of the religion and Muslim is one who follows Islam as a way of life. Much like a "Christian" follows "Christianity." Get it? :)

As for Arabs - a large population of Arabs do follow Islam as their religion (hence, they are Muslims) but there is a small percentage that follows other ways of life, so not all Arabs can be considered Muslims.

I hope that helps! :)

Remember there are also a great deal of christian muslims, jewish arabs. Islam is incredibly complex and a lot of it can be based on the habits of local areas, it's not like a stamp that says 'islam'.
