My yorkie is going to be pregnet, because my family wants her to and i am afraid if something might go wrong with my yorkie. She just turned 3 and she is a small toy size yorkie. But would anything go wrong..? I need to know so that i could tell my family if it is safe or not.
Thank you!

I am a breeder, and from experience I would say that breeding a dog just because your family wants to is irresponsible. The problem with breeding Yorkies is that they are so small...their size causes a lot of problems during birth and a lot of times they have to have the pups C-section which compromises the health of the mother and all of the puppies.

In order to avoid a possible C-section you will have to find a male stud that is smaller than your female. This can be a problem with Yorkies and can cost a lot of money...the smaller the stud the bigger the stud fee. Unless you have researched breeding, whelping, caring for puppies, and the cost of breeding, I would recommend you not breed. Breeding always costs more than the money you get for breeding. You will not make money by selling puppies. Breeding should be taken very seriously and should never be considered just because family members want to have puppies.

I have seen still born pups, pups having to be rescuscitated, pups born mummified, and pups born with birth defects. I have seen all of this in small breeds. Breeding is exhausting, frustrating, stressful, and costly. Something always goes wrong with breeding. ALWAYS. You can never be prepared enough!

Please don't breed unless you have researched everything that could go wrong! Irresponsible breeding can kill your puppies as well as the mother.

No one can guarantee that your Yorkie will not have any problems during the birthing process. You said that she is small, so she will probably need a C-Section.

Do your parents know about the genetic defects that affect the breed?

Do they know they will have to get genetic testing testing done prior to mating. The male will also need to have testing done

Do they know it's possible to lose the mother if the pups are too big to be delivered naturally?

Do they realize that most reputable breeders never make one cent on the sale of puppies?

These are only a few of the questions they need to ask themselves before they breed her.

I'm not trying to be mean or nasty, but pedigree and registered doesn't equal breeding material. It will be much healthier for your dog to be spayed. Spaying lessens the chances of mammary and uterine cancer.

I've ad dded a couple of links that I hope you'll look at, too. If your parents still insist on breeding her, she should be at least 18 months old.

Yorkies are prone to complications. They have a high rate of emergency c-sections, small litters, still birth, mastitis, low/no milk production, weak puppies etc. The smaller the Yorkie is the greater the risk of problems.
They also need to have health tests (not just simple vet exams) before being bred as well as evaluation from unbiased knowledgable people or judges to see if they meet breed standard.
There is A LOT involved with responsible breeding.

This may not be safe. She is at a high risk for a c-section and other problems. If the male is not screened for brucellosis (twice!) she could get a nasty disease and have stillborn pups.

Look at the ethical guidelines on the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America site and you'll see what they think a good breeder should be doing:
http://www.ytca.org/ethics.html

If she is very small (under 5 pounds) the YTCA states that most breeders find that size unsuitable for breeding. See their statement on so-called "teacup" Yorkies here:

http://www.ytca.org/faq.html#A

Bottom line: Your vet can best assess the risk.

no by the way you describe her she is a toy and she will need a c-section and those are like 1500.00 at best . are you preparred for a cost like that ? if not then tell your family to buzz off cause this is your dog and you dont have the money for a c- section . good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

Aside from the fact that your parents shouldn't be breeding the dog (for reasons I'll post in a minute), they should know that they will be bearing the cost of pre-natal care, possibly an emergency c-section, puppy food for the mom, etc. Aside from those costly reasons not to breed, here are the US statistics on animal overpopulation:

HSUS Pet Overpopulation Estimates

Number of cats and dogs entering shelters each year:
6-8 million (HSUS estimate)

Number of cats and dogs euthanized by shelters each year:
3-4 million (HSUS estimate)

Number of cats and dogs adopted from shelters each year:
3-4 million (HSUS estimate)

Number of cats and dogs reclaimed by owners from shelters each year:
Between 600,000 and 750,000 -- 30% of dogs and 2-5% of cats entering shelters (HSUS estimate)

Number of animal shelters in the United States:
Between 4,000 and 6,000 (HSUS estimate)

Percentage of dogs in shelters who are purebred:
25% (HSUS estimate)

Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in one year: 2

Average number of puppies in a canine litter: 6-10

DON'T DO IT, HAVE YOUR PET SPAYED!

She should be fine. Your just not suppose to breed them under one year. We've breed toy poodles before and it was fine. If your concerned you can always go for vet checkups like we go for doctor checkups.

it is always fine to breed if they are over 1. I am 100% possitive that nothinbg will go wrong if the father or mother doesnt have an effect.
