I read on http://usmilitary.about.com/od/navy/l/blsubfaq.htm that the only men on submarines are the ones who volunteered for sub duty. Is it true that if your in the Navy, you don't have to go in a sub unless you volunteer? That sounds very unusual to me. I would think it be tough to find that many volunteers, especially if its for something like nuke where they have essential jobs for submarines. Does anyone have any first-hand experiance with this?

Yes we all are, to the wife who;s husband is a nuke i strongly recommend encouraging him to go subs we are a close family down there and when he gets his dolphins its even better. But i do have to say on trident submarines a nukes sole purpose in life is to push my missiles through the water.

Everyone in the US military is a volunteer. Those in subs volunteer for the duty after they volunteer for the Navy.
Sub duty is highly prized by the volunteers, and there are pretty stiff qualifications that sailors have to meet to get sub duty.

Yes, and they get paid more for the special duty as well as have top of the line food as compared to the rest of the Navy.
