If you are talking about commercially canned foods, if the can is in good shape, not leaking, not rusty, not bulging, then the food is okay for years and years. If you notice any off color or odor or floavor, dont eat it.
If you are referring to home canned, be sure the processing for those items was in a pressure canner. If there is any question, throw them out. If there is any visual sign of spoilage throw it out.
Also store canned goods in a cool dry place for more storage life.

Unless the can is damaged, canned goods can be good for many years. I recall a few years ago Del Monte opened cans of veggies that they had kept as an experiment for something like 15 years, and the report was that except for being slightly less crisp, the veggies were still fine!

I would think about 2 years or so. Look on the can. Most of the time it tells you the expiration date. When I buy canned goods...I rotate them so that I use the oldest first. You don't want to just keep putting the new ones in the front. Maybe it would be best if you date your cans...then you can keep track. That is what my Aunt used to do. Does that help?

Some cans have an expiration date. Storage in a dry, cool place increases shelf life. Avoid any bulging cans or cans that when opened display a release of pressure.

It seems to me that they last an extremely long time. Mine are in my basement closet, in an enclosed shelf space. I still have canned vegetables and soups in there from last year! I've never gotten sick from having them too long. They're sealed and as long as you keep them sealed and in storage until use, they'll last pretty much forever.

I always thought it was like 5 years.
Beware if the can is swelled, rusty or dented. Least that's what I heard.

I have heard three years, but they'll keep longer if they're kept in a cool, dry and dark place such as a basement.
