is a playpen good to use for a whelping box. I would put bumper pads around the edges so pups feet dont get stuck, And cut a door for her to get in and out. And BEFORE anyone says I shouldnt be breeding because I dont know what I can use, I posted a question a while back, I was given this dog telling me she was spay, and 2 weeks later she started to show. I have always had spay and nuetered dogs so I dont know anything. But Im reading all about what she is going through.

Not really a good whelping box unless the is small light weight dog.
A childs swimming pool is a good whelping box as they are easy to clean and are not harmed by getting wet. They are plastic and can be sanatized easily and many times with out harm. It will keep the pups contained and most females can get out easily.

When using a whelping box make sure it is something that keeps the pups in but lets the mother out. For a play pen you would have to lift her out....if it is a small breed the playpen is fine...also if you can put a heating pad or hot water bottle under a bunch of towls....make sure not to leave on overnight or too long....could cause fire. Good Luck

A play pen is probably okay. But usually in whelping boxes they put these shelf like things on all sides of the box so that the puppys can roll under them for protection just in case mom tries to roll over and doesnt know that her puppy is behind her. This will help prevent puppies from getting accidently crushed by mom and they might like to sleep under them when they get older because it feels like a den to them. A play pen is a good idea though and it should work out just fine. The door idea for the mom sounds great. I hope everything goes well and you find homes for the puppys!!

my dogs always decide what to use. I póvide several options some of which are pillows in a box that is cut so pups can not fall out, but mom can get in and out easy. Just like everyone said keep it clean and warm. Do not use plastic. Last time my dog used an old baby blanket she liked it the best to have her pups. We of course had to throw it away, but it was not really good for a baby anyway.

It would probably work.Weve always used beds and boxes. You just have tomake sure the playpens not that big or they will crawl everywhere and where you cut the door you need to have an edge so they dont roll out or fall out since playpins are raised off the ground.

Whatever you use, it has to be EASILY and HIGHLY cleanable. You will be cleaning and disinfecting three times daily. Around the third week, they start to make a AWFUL mess!!!
