Calm down. No they don't hurt. Why do you have to go to the hospital for an enema? Are you getting a colonoscopy? Or are you just really constipated? The enema can be either a Fleets or a water. If it is a Fleets it comes in a bottle with a 2 inch tip. The tip of the bottle (smaller than your pinkie in width) is inserted into your rectum and the fluid squeezed out of the bottle. If its a tap water enema, some warm water will be put in a container that has a small hose at the end of it. The other end of the hose has a small nozzle that will be inserted into your rectum. The only thing either one is going to do is make you poop.

In any case it doesn't hurt. Remember, nothing to eat or drink after midnight tonight. Relax, get some good sleep. I've had enemas and I've given them to my patients before. They are embarrassing, but not painful.

Hospital Enemas

They don't hurt. A lot of the older hispanic women used herbs and medicines that they inserted in the rectum when someone was ill, lots of times these herbs were administered using warm tap water. My grandmother was one of these people and it works, medicine is better able to be absorbed in the rectum. OK now here is a tip to all you college students up doing finals. Make some super super strong coffee, like 3 to 4 times the normal strength. Let it cool down to like 98 degrees or so, fill up an enema bag and let the coffee flow. Try to get at least two cups inside, resist the urge to force it out for like three minutes then let it flow. Another idea, but BE VERY VERY careful. Take two beers pour at room temperature, pour them in to a glass and stir them until they go completely flat. insert them into an enema bag and let it flow, hold it for a few minutes and expel the beer. Go lay down right away cuz your getting drunk quicker and more intense than drinking it

It doesn;t hurt unless you tense up and your muscles squeeze the tube. Mind over matter on this...relax and it will be fine.

Kinda like getting a shot. It hurts like hell if you tense up and the needle penetrates the tense muscle. If you relax, you feel almost nothing.

The experience is like having a turd passing in your intestine otherwise. no big deal

The good Lord take a liking to ya. Hurt?!....Hurt?, you don't know the meaning of pain. It is obvious you have never had a water hose stuck up up your a++. Then they turn on the faucet.....full blast and then the pain, pain, you don't know pain. Then they jerk it out and you are like a balloon that has been blown up an then let go.

No pain, it is just warm water . . . you end up like when you have the flu and get the runs, cleans you out totally.

It is the most painful procedure that a human being can possibly have done. I would HIGHLY suggest, being a doctor, not doing it. Instead, smoke marijuana...

Might I suggest pouring vegetable oil in your colon. It will make the transition smoother...

REVISION: Do NOT LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE. THEY ARE LIARS. AENEMAs hurt as bad as a cathiter. HORRIBLY PAINFUL. I am only telling you this, so that you know what you are in for. I am sorry that you must have this horrifying procedure done, and you have my greatest sympathies.

Yes, a little discomfort. All they'll do is help clean out your digestive tract, which means exactly what you think it means.
