Can I use other brands or do they have to be Canon? WHat is compatible with this camera? THanks!

Well, obviously Canon EF and EFS lenses, but not the ancient Canon FD lenses, and Canon manual focus lenses are not recommended.
Then you can use a bunch of third party brands: Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, etc all make lenses for several brands, including lenses with a Canon EF mount.
And if you want to go crazy, I've heard of people that use Leica and other lenses with an adapter ring.

Other lens makers do make lenses specifically for your camera. They just need to specify the canon mount. Both Tamron and Sigma for example make after market lenses for your camera.

Also there is such a thing as an adapter to mount Nikon Lenses on your camera. I have seen these for sale on ebay. I can't recommend them though, never having used one, so do take care.
