I am trying to find some sort of game where you are a settler in the old west trying to start a ranch or something. I have Westward already, but I am really looking for something a little different where you have to make the decisions regarding settling, what type of business to run, going into town interacting with people, etc. If anyone knows of anything like this I would really appreciate a name. Thank you.

Gun, for PC you are in the old west and have a lot of quests to do, but you don't actually do 'settler' stuff. I think the 'sim' game industry is just picking up on the idea of the old west theme. of course, there's the travel classic of Oregon Trail, which is up to 5th Edition the last I looked.

Also, Age of Empires, not western, but same concept, and a lot more involved, including playable historic characters, and you can hunt or raise animals for food too, along with have multiple buildings, farms, armies, ships, etc.

A favorite of mine, which has a sci-fi and tech theme is Arcanum----has a great AI system, every time you play the game it is different, unlike Westward--many different characters to choose from and develop--you can be good or evil, human, elf, orc, ogre, half-elf, etc, can be magical or techno, can be thief, mage, and many other options. It is a long playable game, and many odd and fun sidequests, and every time you play, the other characters in the game act differently to you, depending on your character's personality---such as some people will hate you if you are evil, others may hate you cause you are good. even if you are male or female can change the story line of the game. You can even play a dog later in the game, if you save his life. Here is a link for Arcanum info.

Not sure if this might be of any use to you - but Age of Empires III has a good 'western' theme to it... Cowboys and indians and building up a settlement sort of game. Not too much of the interacting that I know of...

'The Settlers' is a good game too. Not the western theme- but there are lots of different versions. A VERY old game that I used to play when i was a kid was called 'Oregon Trail'. You didnt set up a town, but you were traveling and trading and keeping your passengers fed and watered and alive. It was a good game.

Good luck!

This one is old (alright, really old) but it might work : Oregon Trail (I do believe there is now an Oregon Trail 2, but that isn't for sure)
