My cat is about 5 years old and she's fixed. I noticed today that she was meowing a lot, which it sounds like a cat in heat. Because she's fixed I know it's nothing like that, but I noticed she was in the litter box 3 times in about 7 minutes shaking her tail and moving her backend as if she was trying to work something out, but she didn't pee or poop or anything. She also has been hissing while no one is around her. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong.

Sounds like there is something that isn't passing and it is causing her a great deal of pain. Has she been excreting and urinating normally? PLEASE, PLEASE, TAKE HER TO THE VET!! Although it is not common in female cats, she may have a urinary blockage that will kill her if you leave it untreated for more than a couple of days.
I have had two male cats die from urinary blockages. Each of them went to the catbox repeatedly with no results. One died because there was no vet available within 300 miles, and the other because I just wasn't vigilant enough.

You didn't say how old your cat is, or whether he goes outside or not. If he is an older cat you should take him to a vet. If he goes outside sometimes you should take him to see a vet. If he isn't that old and does not go outside try giving him some furball medicine. You can find this at any grocery or pet store. And yes that is what it is called I know it sounds gross but cats need this to be able to digest their food without the fur getting in the way. You could also try feeding him some grass but I would put him somewhere like the bathroom if you do give him grass, because he will throw up after eating it but this is a good thing for the cat.

It sounds like your cat could either have a urinary tract infection, or could have urolithes (urinary stones) that are causing a blockage. It is rare for females to have urinary blockages since the urethra is much bigger then that of a male, but if she has stones, she could be blocked. Since she isn't able to produce any urine, this would be considered an emergency and she should be seen immediately. The meowing is probably due to pain as an infection or blockage is very painful. If she isn't seen soon, she could become azotemic - which is a build up of waste materials in the blood stream that normally the kidneys would excrete. Once these waste materials build up to a certain level, the cat will start vomiting. If the blockage is not relieved soon, it can cause permanent damage to the kidneys, inbalance of electrolytes in the blood and eventually affect the heart, causing death.

Your cat could have something in her digestive track that is causing pain and problems. I would get her to a vet soon, so they can run tests to see what the problem is. Usually when cats hiss for no reason, they are in pain.

I am guessing UTI or something digestive. I would call the vet and ask them. My cat has had many UTIs and I have had to put her on special Urinary Track Health food. That has seemed to work well for her.

Good luck! In the meantime, watch your kitty and give her lots of love. But please call the vet right away and if they suggest bringing her in....which I am guessing they will...please do so.

It may be a bladder problem or an obstruction in the GI tract. She may have swallowed something, have a hairball stuck, or worse. I'd get her to the vet asap...she also may just be constipated but better safe than sorry! Good luck!

you better get to a vet right away because it might be a urinary tract infection, which can become deadly very quickly. Check your laundry baskets if your cat has access to them for blood. Also, check the litter box for blood.

Ask her vet or she may be a little hyper play with her a little but still take her to the vet.
