It's not about religion, it's tribal. Saddam was a Sunni and he killed many Shiites during his rule. Shiites want some payback so their Shiite brothers in Iran are supplying them weapons and explosives. It would be better to split the country of Iraq into three parts then everyone can stop killing each other for power.

the main distinction between Shiites and Sunnis lies of their distinctive non secular ideals surrounding the successors of Prophet Muhammad. Sunnis have confidence that the heirs of four caliphs may well be recognised as valid non secular leaders of muslims. whether, Shiites have confidence that basically the inheritor of the fourth caliph (Ali) may well be recognised as valid non secular leaders of muslims. Why is there a conflict between the two communities? Boils all the way down to historic motives. Ali's supporters killed the third caliph and later, the Sunnis killed Ali's son (Hussein) at a conflict. Hussen's martyrdom to the Shiites may well be considered as some thing such as Jesus's crucifixion. Do they "hate" one yet another? below Saddam, the Sunnis governed Iraq, even however they have been the minority. Now the government is largely Shiite. by using the international, Sunnis enormously outnumber Shiites. There are approximately one million.3 billion Muslims, and basically approximately 15 % are Shiites. yet Shiites are maximum human beings in Iraq and the overpowering majority in Iran. The Taliban in Afghanistan is Sunni. My element being that maximum sunni muslims interior the international do not even have lots touch with shiite muslims, not to show hate them. regrettably, the geopolitical stress interior the midsection east has led to communities such the Hezbollah to sow discord and spotlight the diversities between the two non secular divisions, foremost to modern-day-day violence interior the region.

Why the hell dont they jack it in and become Christian, go down the Pub and have a Jar of Scrumpy and a Pork Pie.

They really aren't all that different in belief structures...what happened was that when the Prophet died the different groups believed different people were his true successor...so they split. It's more of a split than say Protestant and Catholic (where a person can change for say, marriage), and it's tribal. In a week and half I am traveling to Oman, where the majority of the people are Ibadhi (sp?) but there are Sunnis and Shiites and they all live in peace.

THIS IS A VERY HUGH TOPIC EDWARD IT IS NOT A TOPIC THAT CAN BE ANSWERED IN 1 SITTING NOT EVEN IN 1 DAY TIME YOU WOULD HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT THE QURAN AND AHADITHS AND THE MAJOR PART OF CALIPHS.THERE ARE MANY SECTS OF SHIA'AHS AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE NOT TRUE MUSLIMS BECAUSE THEY R OUTSIDE OF THE FOLDS OF ISLAM SAME AS OTHER SECTS IN ISLAM THERE ARE 73 SECTS IN ISLAM AND ONLY 1 IS THE CORECT 1.

all religions were written (or whatever you think) by some influential persons, who are dead long ago or in heaven/hell (what a joke)

In those days since most people were illiterates ( lack of knowledge of science and things like that), so rumours about wonder cures, miracles spread easily faster than the disease itself.

people (those days) were mainly simple (dependent on agriculture, animals etc, etc) so could be easily manupulated by influential persons( something like our present day politicians/leaders or gods)
they tought them how to live, and these people easily became their
soft preys, spreading their messages (guidebooks or whatever) for free. they became big brands (like coke)
or we all are psychologically weak , that we need a deadman's "how to guides" to live our lives. (there are lot of free self-help articles, stories out there)don't we know how to use our brains?(or trash your brains) please don't tell me rain, forest theories.why are we advertising fr free
