The food I feed my dog right now, Authority Harvest Baked, is all natural ingredients, and is healthy for dogs... But the only bad thing about it is Whole Ground Wheat which the the 2nd ingredient... Why is wheat so bad for dogs? Will wheat affect my dog's health later in his years?

As mentioned wheat is a common allergen but it also isn't as easy for dogs to digest as barley, oats and rice.

The one thing that you are missing that reduces the quality of this food is that Wheat is actually the main ingredient. I know it says chicken first and then wheat but because chicken is 70% water that is lost when it is cooked, the wheat is actually the main ingredient post cooking.

Now the highest quality foods on the market don't contain wheat but they also have chicken AND chicken meal as the first two ingredients. This tells you that it has fresh chicken in it but some of it has had the water removed (hence the term 'meal'). When the water has been removed BEFORE it is added to the food it means that the true protein content is much higher than what you would find say in the Authority.

this is just another trick that is used by lower quality pet food companies.

It isn't that wheat is bad for dogs. But many dogs have allergies to wheat. If your dog is showing signs of allergies, scratching, eyes tearing then I would be careful what you feed him/her. If her/she isn't allergic to wheat, it will not effect your dog's health in his later years.

Its not that wheat is bad for dogs, but they can be allergic to it... unlike cats, dogs don't HAVE to have meat in their diets to survive... you should always try to provide a balanced diet for your dog, including grains AND meats...

it might be alergies, or it could be that when wheat gets wet it expands and when they eat that they think they are full when they are not and end up starving because they think they are full when there not.
