Here in Australia, coriander is used for the 'normal' variety, cilantro is used for a variety which is 'slow bolt', i.e. slow to get to seeding stage, so it is more useful for people who want to use the leaves (More leaves, less seed per plant). As far as I know, this is just a convention which local growers use, and not a widespread difference in nomenclature.
It is only a varietal difference, they are the same species.

My answer is that they are one in the same plant species. The old name coriander generally refers to the seeds while the the modern term cilantro refers to the green plant used in salsas or as a garnish.Coriandrum sativum is an annual plant of the carrot or parsley family, growing 16 to 20 inches high, with parsley like leaves and pink or white flower clusters.

From what I understand, coriander is just another name for cilantro. I believe that they are one and the same.
Cilantro is the name that is Spanish in origin...Coriander is Medieval English.
