Please help. My dog has always lived with severe allergies. She licks paws until raw - summer is the worst. Vet has her on 3 25mg pills of benedryl per day as well as a prednisone tablet daily. This has helped stop the licking almost completely. Now she has developed very (and i mean severe) scaly skin on her back. There are spots all over her back - many are scabs. We feed her canned Purina Pro Plan salmon/rice formula - she won't eat dry food anymore. Just trying to find an answer for her poor back at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You may want to consider asking your vet about a prescription dog food called ZD its made by Hills, the same company that make Science Diet. It's is specially designed to dog with allergies especially food allergies. Talk to the vet about it. Also you may want to pick up whats called Malasab shampoo. I know most vets sell it but i'm not sure if pet store do or not. It really helps with dogs with skin problems but be sure to ask your vet how to use it because it has to be deluted and such.

She may have a flea allergy or she might be allergic to that food now. Solid Gold makes really good dog and cat for for pets with allergies:

My dog was about 12 when she got flea allergies. She had to get a shot once a month and it helped her a lot. I gave her all the Vet flea treatments but just one flea bit and she would break out and fleas are in the yards in our locale.

This poor dog. This is obviously an allergy to something---& it may be her food. If you're not feeding her a potato (or fish) & sweet potato based diet, I would try that, & she needs to be washed in a Colloidal Oatmeal Shampoo (try www.DavisManufacturing.com ), & I think I'd change Vets. Benedryl will treat symptoms, not causes.

call your vet it sounds like they have a yeast infection on thier skin, my on yorkie gets them all the time and has those exact same symptoms, thay are easily treated with antibiotics, but it will not go away on its own. also talk to you vet about derma-soothe shampoo, it will help it to heal faster and prevent further infection. it took my vet forever to find the right medications to help suzi, dont hesitate to ask another vets opinion.
