My husband is Irish and I want my daughter to have a pretty Irish name. So I have picked either Fiona or Fionnuala.

Fionnuala is pronounced "finn + ula". Try this link to hear Seamus Haney pronounce it:

I absolutely adore the sound of Finnuala, but sadly, no one will ever be able to pronounce it.

If those are your only two choices, go with Fiona unless you're totally in love with Fionnuala. If that's the case tell people to shove it.

Of course, if you have other choices for the first name ... choose a more modern Irish one for the first name and use Fionnuala as the middle name. I love it SOOO much.

Personally, I'm a little weird, and people won't be able to pronounce my kids' names anyway (they will definitely have traditional Irish names ... no Anglicized spellings for me). So I would probably name her Fionnuala. ; )

PS - You know what? The people here saying Fionnuala is ugly or weird aren't even pronouncing it correctly to themselves. Ignore them. It's beautiful even if they have no idea what it is.

Fionnuala is very Irish - if that's what you like go with it - however your daughter will have some fun with people mis-pronouncing her name. I live in the UK and am constantly entertained by people trying to pronounce Irish names using english phonetics - it's always difficult trying to get your tongue around tradional names of another language - perhaps this uniqueness is a good thing that will allow you daughter to stand out from the crowd.

Maybe wait to decide until you see her (if you haven't already) - when my friends have seen their baby for the first time the name kind of picks itself.

Don't worry, which every you pick will be good.

I love the name Fiona. The problem with the other one is I don't know how to pronounce it. I love Irish names but wish there was a pronunication key with some of them!

I would prefer Fiana that's really pretty because fiona and fionnuala sounds too much alike and they sound like old people's names.

Fiona but it does make me think of Princess Fiona from Shrek.
