I think it depends on the type of acne you have. Some people just have pimples and call them acne. My mom works for a dermatologist, and the best place to start is by washing your face with orange Dawn dish soap. You will probably need to moisturise so choose an oil free face lotion. This is the best and most cost effective method. The Dawn kills the bacteria that causes acne. There are other treatments out there. But they are very costly, I know. You can inquire to your doctor, and possibly get a referral to a derm. That way insurance will cover it, or at least some. Tazorac works for some people, but again this will have to come via the doc. My mom says to stay away from Accutane which is a pill, because it taxes the liver.

I have had bad acne since I hit puberty. I tried all sorts of things. Proactive didnt work for me, but I know it has worked for other people. Retin-A (prescribed) worked some, but it still wasnt good enough for me. I have a system now that has worked wonders. My doctor prescribed a low dose antibiotic that I take every night before bed (pill), I use the clearasil vanishing cream every night, I wash my face in the morning when I get up and at night before bed, and I use a calming lotion from Aveeno under my makeup each morning, it helps keep the redness down. Also when I think about, maybe once a week, I use a mask or deep cleansing/exfoliating. My advice is just to try a lot of different things to find something that works for your skin type.

DEFINITELY, Clearasil Vanishing Maximum Strength Acne Treatment Cream.

It's got 10% Benzoyl Peroxide in it.

It comes in a little tube, but just on the top of your pinky is enough for your whole face.
It's the strongest thing you can get over the counter.

If you need something stronger than that (you wouldn't unless you had like a basketball growing on the side of your face) you should go to the dermatologist.

Pro Active worked wonders for me. I never broke out until I had children. Then I was never clear for years. So I tried it and it worked right away. Any blemishes that do show up are tiny and gone the next day. Good Luck!!
