There are as many answers to this as there are people who study to learn a second language.
Many people learn a second language to make themselves more salable in the market place, to get a better job, or any job at all. Many people who learn English as a second language learn it for this reason.
Some people learn a second language so that they can meet other people, make personal connections across cultural boundaries.
Other people (like me) learn languages just because they enjoy learning, and get the other two as a side effect.

The second language is so useful on a number of fronts. First, as I found when I studied Esperanto, it taught me how much of my own language that I didn't understand, and how an alteration of how we put ideas together can open up your perspective of the people around you. I learned the variations of sentence structure and thought processes.
Any language that you choose can't help but be beneficial. You open up the possibilities of places to visit. In some cases You open up the whole world, like I did with my choice. I'll be going to Germany in a few months, after three months of learning Esperanto. You can't ask for much more than that.

It isn't necessary for English speaking people to do so, but it's not only fun to learn different languages, it's also a nice gesture to friends you will make through the internet that you are interested in their language. E.g. some of my friends learned some Dutch words and even came overhere to visit us and see the country.

when you learn any language, you get to know the culture of the country it is spoken in, and you start understanding and loving it. It s about understanding, and tolerance of other cultures and peoples. For me personally, learning a new language ( something i really really enjoy doing - English is my 3rd language) also allows me to get in touch with the history of the people who speak it. It s all about learning or thinking where a particular word came from, what were its historical roots :-)

It is important to learn a second language because you never know where your going to end up in life. For example if you move to Miami, spanish would be needed. If you don't speak spanish in Miami, your pretty much screwed.

It's important in many ways, not the least of which is that you'll have access to information and people that would otherwise remain closed off to you (not everything is translated and not everone speaks English). Also, I found that studying foreign languages did much to improve my understanding of my native language.
