Haha....there's actually this alley in Bangkok near Tomasat University that has all the charm sales tables. I found the descriptions not to be so consistent so unless you get a description of the charms 'powers' from the seller (ask!) you can't really know. And given the variance in descriptions I'm inclined to believe the effect is that of a placebo or simple PMA.

As a Buddhist,I would like to tell you not to waste your money on it.One of my teacher(very senior Buddhist monk) made and sell many Buddhist charm and many of his other students wear them except me and a few other student.Why?Because the teacher know that we understand the teaching of the Buddha;he told us it is just all psychological!
