I have a 1994 Nissan Maxima, and the brake lights will not shut off even when the car is off. I unlpugged the battery so it doesn't die but I am wondering what is causing this? I read somewhere that there is a switch under the brake pedal that might be stuck? I did not feel a switch under the pedal, and wondering if that only applies to newer cars. I am a chick but pretty good with fixing stuff and have no money to go to a mechanic for atleast 2 months. Please help :)

Well, you almost figured it out on your own. Whoever told you about the switch was correct, but the location was a little off. The switch should be located along the rod that attaches to the pedal. Usually these switches can be purchased at an auto parts store, or if all else fails, at a Nissan dealer. Before going out and buying a new switch, you may want to make sure that it didn't just pop off of the rail. These switches are "normally closed". What this means is if it fell off of the rod, it would stay on constantly. Good luck and I hope this helps!

If there is not a switch on the brake pedal underneath the dash board. Check and see if there is a switch on the Brake Master Clyinder. The switch is stuck or bad or not ajusted right. The switch on the brake pedal will be toward the back of the car. You might have to stick your head under the dash board to see it. Take the drivers seat and push it all the way back. Drape your legs over the back of the seat and then put your head under the dash. It's not easy. Make sure you have a flashlight so you can see. You can also push the seat back and lay on your back on the floor board too.

When you push the brake pedal, it lets out a spring loaded button that turns on the brake lights. It's probably located high on the brake pedal arm, toward the driver (rather than toward the motor).
The switch can be replaced pretty easily, and they only cost a few bucks.

Sounds like the brakelight switch is stuck. It should be behind the bar that supports the brake pedal. Gently smack it with a hammer. If it's not there then you may have to take it to a mechanic.

There is a rubber bumper on the brake pedal. It contacts the switch plunger and turns off the brake lights. The rubber bumper rots and falls out of the brake pedal leaving a hole so the plunger extends and the brake lights stay on.

no, it is the breaklight switch. you are going to have to crawl under the car to look for it, can't just feel for it, but that probably is the problem.
