Our neighbor is spreading horrible untrue things around about my husband and I around our neighborhood. The people who know us know that it's not true, but I feel as though I should write them some type of a small letter asking them to please stop slandering us, we have done nothing to them but live next door. (They have not liked us since we moved in 3 years ago. They walked over to our house the day we moved in..and instead of a welcome, they said, " If you are going to live here you'd better be sure to keep this lawn mowed and that hedge trimmed.") The recent "story" going around about us us so atrocious that I thought about making a police report but I don't know if that's going too far or I should just right the letter first and see what happens.

If you write a letter it will just be fuel for the fire. I would just ignore your neighbor, escpecially if the people who know you know the things aren't true. DO contact the police if they physically or verbally threaten you or your property. Have you gone to your neighbor and CALMLY asked them what their problem is with you and what type of agreement you could work out to live harmoniously? My grandma always said to "kill them with kindness". If that doesn't work, then they are just small-minded folks who have nothing better to do than stir up drama.

I have been in this situation in which my neighbor’s hated me for no reason. It’s stressful and a reflection of there own anger. I have read the responses and can tell you in my experience ignoring the people does not work. I think having the police or an attorney involved, will quite them initially but, they will be seething for a long time. The answer is the most difficult thing to do. Try to be there friends. Leave them a Christmas present, or a card. Act like you know nothing about the bad things said about you. You don’t have to like them, just make them feel like you are no threat. Fear, causes anger and hatred. Good luck.

You need to get advice from a lawyer for sure. It may cost a little (or maybe a lot!) but if it's just a consultation maybe they won't charge? That way if you need to start documenting, voice recording, video taping (which is really the only thing that will stand up in court) then you can get a start on it now. So sorry about this, what miserable neighbors to have!

While writing a letter will make YOU feel better, these hostile clods need a letter from your attorney. Is is against the law in most states to "slander" ,malign, or defame someones character. Usually in these cases, the ignorant parties do not see their behavior as rude, or malicious, a lawyer pointing this out to them could be the eye opener they need.

From the way that you have just presented yourself, you sound like good, upstanding people. I say you write the letter 1st. It isn't fair or neighborly 4 them 2 to do things like that! If that doesn't work, try to be nice to them. If that doesn't work, then by all means, file that police report. You are human too, you can only put up with so much.
God Bless!

Yes, make a police report and document all incidences of slander. I would contact a lawyer and have THEM send the neighbors a letter.

They dont sound like reasonable people, so I doubt that contacting them would work.

I think you should consult an attorney.

I know this is probably the last thing you would want to do, but you really should consider moving. That is often the only thing that works with disorderly neighbors.

no, you should not write a letter first. as soon as they started slandering your family, there sense of reasoning went out the window, and if there harrasing this much already you need to put an end to it as soon as possible, getting the police involved creates a paper trail which you might need for future legal matters.

You need to document all that has happen and what you have done about it (if nothing - write nothing) - what they are doing is illegal and you can get a lawyer to get them to stop saying bad untrue things about you - but it will be expensive!@
