The "western countries" -- USA, France, UK, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal -- don't have as good a "system" of supporting medical practitioners to help "third world" countries as Cuba does. But there are things like "Medecins Sans Frontieres" operating out of France. I saw that Medecins Sans Frontieres had a building in Gaza --Gaza City-- once in 1996. That would be useful work.
If it is before you go to Med school, you might teach English in Southern Lebanon. There is a program operating out of the UK where you can volunteer to be an English teacher there in the summer.

Give the "best answer" to the first fellow who answered, because he has everything right. Medecins Sans Frontieres is a great way to do humanitarian work abroad, thats actually what I want to do after college... but I'm still in high school so I've got a long way to go. :)
Hey, and dont forget about Africa! Angelina Jolie can't heal an entire continent on her own, mind you. There's plenty of opportunities there, as well as in Asia and South America. It really depends on what region you prefer, and also whether or not you can speak another language. Me, I speak French so I plan to do humanitarian work in Francophone countries, hopefully in Africa.
If you want to work in Asia, and you know some languages there or are willing to learn some, then I say go for it! Good Luck.

>> I wanted to go to Africa, but it seems like all the celebrities got that taken care of.
Madonna visiting Malawi has about as much effect on the plight of the people in Africa as does a hamster farting in a hurricane. There is lots to do there. There's lots to do in the rest of the world, too.
After you get out of medical school you will probably have over $100,000 in loans to pay off, so you will need to get a normal job as a doctor. After they are paid off, there are hundreds of organizations that could use a physician.
If you are doing a decent job as a student, you can expect to be able to volunteer 8 hours a week, tops. There are opportunities to volunteer near your campus.

You start by saving money since you must pay your own way and the cost of housing and food. Learn a skill that is useful. Yes start locally and Habitat for Humanity is the place. You will learn skills that can be used anywhere and travel with this organization.
