It's an invention of the Reformation, and it is not Biblically founded.

Philipians 2:12 "Beloved, you have always shown yourselved obediant; and now that I am at a distance, not less but much more than when I am present, you must work to earn your salvation, in anxious fear."

2 Cor 5:10 "All of us have a scrutiny to undergo before Christ's judgement seat, for each to reap what his mortal life has earned. good or ill, according to his deeds."

Rom 2:6 "will award to every man what his acts have deserved"

Rom 11:22 " there is graciousness, then, in God, and there is also severity. His severity is for those who have fallen away, his graciousness is for thee, only so long as thou dost continue in his grace; if not, thou too shalt be pruned away"

It is easy to see that this "doctrine of men" flies in the face of the Bible.

People think when they acepted Christ, that's all they need to get to heaven. But, what if a long the way, you back slide, and convert to hindu or islam. Then, you won't have Christ anymore.
Many have “accepted” Jesus as their Savior and have said a Sinners Prayer at one time in their life. They go to Church on Sundays and call themselves a Christian - yet they haven't surrendered all to Jesus, and they continue to compromise with the World, and continue in Sin. They are indifferent and have rejected the Real Gospel Message from JESUS of Repentance & Trust in Him, as well as forsaking all sin, and obeying Gods Commandments.

Luke 13:3-5, Mark 1:15, Matt, 4:17, Luke 9:23-26, 1 John 2:3-6

2 Tim. 3:5 “They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly.”

Multitudes of Churches (not all) LOOK like they are “Hot” and on “Fire” for Jesus. In fact many Churches have exciting, expensive, and entertaining: Church Programs, Productions, and Great sounding Christian Music – a lot of them catering to the Youth. These Churches have polished and even professional Musicians who have visions and goals of becoming huge Mega Churches (if they aren’t already), and creating a certain type of “culture” through their music, and message. Their music and their teaching all appear so Christ-Centered, with everyone’s hands in the air and “shouts of praise” to God. It’s however only half-baked, lukewarm, and ready to be spewed out of the Lord's mouth. Amos 5:21-24, Rev. 3:15-21

It goes against everything that Jesus taught. What did he himself say?

"Go in through the narrow door"

"Exert yourself vigorously"

"The one that has endured to the end, this is the one that will be saved."

I am in a saved condition *right now*. But I could lose that condition, just like Judas did, and become fit for Gehenna, into which even Hell is cast off into.

"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire." - Revelation 20:14

Peter said, that "If the righteous are being saved "WITH DIFFICULTY", then how much more so the unrighteous?"

When you read Pauls words in the original Koine Greek, and understand the imperfective state of many of the verbs he used, it is easy to understand that it is a CONTINUAL process (That's what an imperfective verb is) of making sure we are saved.

What did he himself say? That we must "continually make our minds over". It's a continual process. Not once for all time.

It becomes clear that when putting ALL the Bible verses together, that the Bible truly teaches that we must continually work at trying to please God, and remain in a saved condition until the final test is over with, or, for ones going to heaven, they are "sealed" in the heavens.

Because so many people today are so far in sin when they hear the words "Once saved always saved", they think this gives them a right to sin all they want. However if we read in 11 Corinthians 5:17, we read, "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." This means that when you become a Christian, God changes your want to's. You now live to please God and not yourself. A better way to put this is Eternal Security

Pilgrim, according to your doctrine we would still be under a system of works. If thats the case we would all be screwed again, just like before grace because all "saved" Christians have backslidden or fallen away to some extent. I struggle between flesh and spirit everyday and sometimes I come up short. Don't we all? That is why it is reffered to as a battle. Paul says "I do what I don't want to do and that which I want to do I don't." What does that describe?

I think the biggest problem with it is that it was invented in the 16th century. Prior to that it was never taught.

I know some people think its taught in the Bible. However there are some verses that are pretty tough on that. Examples: Hebrews 6:4, or Jesus' Parable about the Sower and the Seed.. What the "once saved" crowd do is twist the scriptures to make it fit their theology.

Dear righteous,

There is nothing wrong with the teaching. However, the problem is in individuals "thinking" that they are saved when in reality they are not. Oh, what a sad day when that person stands before Christ to be condemned to hell when he "though" or was told that he was saved. The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 13:5 to "Examine ourselves whether we be in the faith..." A person should always be examining their life to see if it is in line with 1 John 2:3, 4. Do we have an ongoing desire to be obedient to everything that God says in the Bible? Are we hungry to search the Scriptures and to be more faithful to God's word.

It depends on your definition of saved.

Once born of God, always born of God. That is the spiritual rebirth by the will of God and is a gift and not of works.

When a person is born of God, person inherits everlasting life. So that salvation / everlasting life is always saved. Jesus can never say, "I never knew you.".

But we work out our salvation daily. God saves us every day in helping guide our path and decisions. Faith Hope & Love are everlasting & rewards. If we sin, that will be done away with & isn't save. But our soul rewards are dependant on our obedience to the Word of God.

People in a pre born of God state, who have heard the Gospel, yet never truly confessed Jesus Christ Lord to God with heart faith in the Atonement for sins & Resurrection from the dead; those people are in a dangerous place and could lose their salvation / heaven. If they die, or deny or come against Christ.

Once saved always saved is correct. Every single person that spouted the hard core line on here is guess what?: a sinner. People need to quit being so hard core. I was saved very young and have been a very very bad boy for many years. I have done things that the hard-core christians would have crucified me for..But guess what, in all those years of humanly mistakes, I never quit praying, I never quit thinking about God and now on the other side of all of that, I have the best relationship with the Father I ever had...People need to walk whatever walk God has planned for them and keep their eyes on him and not on their brothers and sisters. Best way to lead more people to Christ is for those people to see something in you they want, Christ's Light. When they see those hardcore, "it's my way or hell" kind of people, they are scared off from Christ. And we all know what happens to those who run just one person away from God...When you represent God/Christ you better be representing Love, Acceptance and the same patience God has shown with you....You wonder why all these people are on this page turned off to God....It's All About Love brothers/sisters. If you feel anger in your heart at this very moment after reading this, please get on your knees and ask God to show you how to Love All People like his Son did...please....BIG LOVE.....kevin

I believe once your saved you are always saved. People can fall from Grace and they would have to ask for forgiveness from their sin and try to walk with God from now on. But, I don't believe you can get unsaved, like what the other people that answered this question before me, Jesus doesn't do anything half way, its all of the way or not at all, people can turn away from God, but, it was Jesus that died on the cross so we could have eternal life.
