My friend got angry at me because I kept smiling at guys (if she paid more attention i smiled at everyone) when we were out drinking. It wasnt even a big smile, no teeth and i didn't wink or anything. I smile because i'm polite if someone looks at me what should i do, just frown at them.

Do you think smiling is an invitation for conversation, or just being polite!??? If someone smiles at you do you take it as... come and talk?

What kind of friend gets angry because you smile at people? Sounds like someone that sucks the joy out of others. I say continue smiling. I like smiling. It's polite. If you were smiling and then winking, staring or making flirty eyes with someone then it's an invitation to talk. Some people might try to have a conversation with you if you only smile but so what?! You might meet some very nice people that way. I would rather have someone smile than smirk. If your single then do whatever!

I'm an old nurse and when I was young I couldn't leave the dept. without someone stopping me and asking me questions or directions. My boss told me when I'm on a run for supplies or medicines that if I didn't look at everyone directly and try not to smile so much I'd make it too my destination without having to help others!!! Now sometimes you do need to get where your going fast and this did work. So in answer to your question it must be yes. I still give people direct looks and smile allot, but I know when I can't afford to be friendly and I guess I use it. It made her happy anyway!! I also asked her to send others so I didn't have to go against my nature unless it was necessary

it depends on the smile of course from what you described it seems as though it was simply a polite smile which some people may misinterpret...especially if they had a few drinks. In general, however, a simple polite smile is all it really is but if it's more than those polite smiles it is definitely an invitation for a conversation.

you're going to get these kinds of comments from both sides, trust me. If you're not smiling and your "normal" face kind of looks like your mad then your going to hear that your a b*****. So I say smile away. At least they can't say that you look mad, right? And if that draws attention to a cute guy that comes over and says hi then more power to you. I'm happily married and smile because it's just the polite thing to do, and I'm not looking for any extra attention.

It's just being polite, I think, but everyone is different. I guess it depends on the circumstances.

not necessarily, it is just a way of saying hello without having 2 be verbal, but it can lead 2 conversation.

yes, I think that smiling at people invites them to talk to you, that's what I do.

Not necessarily, but depending on who you smile at, they come to their own conclusions.
