1) The Church of the Middle Ages provided a structure after the fall of Rome that meshed well with feudalism. 2) The Church was the keeper of the flame of intellectual thought and provided via the network of monasteries and parishes for the dissemination of knowledge during a period when knowledge transfer had no other way to spread.
A work about weaknesses.... I think the German term is "zeitgeist"... meaning to look at another time from a modern point of view... the point being that it can not be done objectively. Yes, the humanness of the church has been flawed often over the centuries it would be difficult to say that it caused a weakness in the society of the middle ages.

They brought freedom of worship instead of state run churches. When people as a whole disregard God in our representative democracy we need a National revival.
