It's too complicated to answer here. I recommend the book "Eats, shoots and leaves" which answers all punctuation questions.

Or see here:

You can use commas when you have a compound or complex sentence, or after a prepositional phrase beginning a sentence or an appositive. You use a semicolon (;) when you have two complete sentences that go together to make a more meaningful sentence but you don't want to use a conjunction.

Read what you have written and place commas where you would pause. Be careful you dont change the intended meaning though.

There are no rules, believe me on this. For any text book that suggests a rule, then expect another to contradict.

The semi colon ; wherever you feel appropriate.

Wars have been fought over this one :

'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'

and

'Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise.'

They had no puntuation you see.
