Do you think bringing back the draft would be a good thing. Do you think it will help people going in become better people, and strong individulals?

No I don't think it would be a good thing.

Cowards would run to Canada or something to avoid it.

Bad enough parents of soldiers are complaining about a "backdoor draft". Just means the person didn't read the contract. You are actually obligated to the military for longer than you are on active duty - and can be forced to serve that extra time.

On one hand bringing back the draft will cause a lot of the same problems that came up during the Vietnam war. This would cause a lot of stress on the military and the level of training would go down because the draftee would have little to no motivation. On the other hand I think it would help some people to become a stronger individual because the military teaches discipline which is one thing lacking in today's society.

Not a draft but a DUTY is what is needed. Make it a law that every male over 18 "owes" his country 24 months of service. It would "grow him up". He doesn't have to be carrying an M-16. He could be a computer programmer, trained for free! When I joined I was given a contract. I got to be a radio announcer like Robin Williams! I loved it. If they broke the contract and handed me a rifle, I could pull out my paper and be legally discharged on the spot. (My brother did just that when the Army tried to make him fix trucks instead of jet engines.) Let the person defer service by going to college. He can report later as an officer with a degree. Sign up for ROTC and Uncle Sam pays for it. But if you draft, you have to give a drug screen. All an unsatisfied person would have to do is show up at the draft board stoned and he'd be out. In talking with a Marine friend, he said they'd go to jail. I replied the jails would be filled to bursting and our ranks would be thinned. Many would rather be a live inmate than a dead hero. Draftees are not given their choice of "Method of Service" (MOS). Enlistees are. A two-year across the board DUTY would change a LOT about America. You'd have responsible people that were ex-military instead of gang members and lay abouts.

Well-lead troops become more knowledgeable and thoughtful citizens, and the current lack of military knowledge among the civilian populace is alarmingly poor. But the all-volunteer force is remarkably more capable. I can't imagine wanting to go back to a draft, but I do wish people would try to learn a little something about the military, and military history, before they shoot off their mouths about the military. There are a few pro-war chauvinists and a ton of anti-war ignoramuses on line these days, and I'm hard-pressed to decide which group is more annoying.

No. For one thing, people will be angry about having to join and morale will be low and things will not be as productive. Can you imagine having a bunch of spoiled 18 and 19 year olds in the military who don't want to be there? It will be just like high school.

The draft will be a terrible thing to do. We will again have soldiers unwilling to fight. Volunteers are the best warriors in the world, because they are dedicated to a cause and not forced.

I think it would accelerate war weariness. Few on either side of the Iraqi debate want a draft, just a bad omen when your telling people to go fight whether they want to or not
