Almost anything you can dangle in front of them. Some cats are more or less playful then others and normal this decreases with age.

A lot of cats outgrow their playfulness, but not all!
The single most beloved "toy" I've known cats to play with is that plastic ring that you remove from a gallon of milk when you open it! Every cat I've ever KNOWN loves those.

They also love to chase string, and bat around crunchy-sounding paper. Also, little balls with bells in them

They paly with Table tennis balls or balls of that size. They play with our fingers and bite us softly.
We can hang a soft object and sway it in front of the cat. But we should always be there to keep moving the things for the cat to play.
In villages, the cats play with mice a lot before eating them up.
Some times when the mouse escapes they are very sad. Give them a meat piece then!

You need to keep the cat as a kitten, then teach it to be playful. That's what I think

My cats love to play with crochet balls, fur mice, rolled up balls of paper, catnip toys, and any toy dangling from a stick!

A note to folks that said string or yarn: If a cat ingests yarn or string, the fiber can become a foreign linear body that causes gastric intussussception, which can lead to death if left untreated. The only treatment for it is abdominal surgery. If you do want to let your cat play with yarn or string, please do so supervised, and don't leave any yarn/string unsupervised. Don't allow the cat to ingest any yarn or string!

Try those balls with bells inside, or you could make a small model fishing rod in which you could dangle a feathered object (not your pet bird though). An old fashioned feather duster?
Also cats go crazy for toys with catnip in, give it a go.

They play with just about anything that moves. Cats LOVE catnip too... so if you add a little to a toy they play with, it's non-stop excitement for HOURS!!!

cats do play a lot, if you give them anything which is tail like and keep moving, i will attack it and start playing with it. May be a rope will do.
