I find it very difficult to get the bloody cork out. Any tips. (I expect there will be a few stupid answers).

I've found that while your regular corkscrew won't be much help, if you have one of the "rabbit" variety -- clamps on the side of the bottle, you just lift the handle and then push it back down and the cork pops out -- or any of the cheap knock-offs of the rabbit, it will work everytime.

Usually the traditional "waiter's corkscrew" will give enough leverage to open the bottle, requiring no more effort than with a normal cork. These corkscrews are usually only few dollars and cost a fraction of what a Rabbit costs.

all 3 of the other answers are great ideas. they also have double hinged "waiters friends". but I'm here to supply you with the stupid answers you wanted in hopes of 10 points. push the cork into the bottle so it floats like a bobber, tap the top with a hammer and filter it through a coffee filter, put a screw in it tie string to the screw and a bone to the string, give the bone to your dog, put it in an absolute vaccuum ( bought at any casting store for $500) and the lack of air pressure will pull the cork out (and the wine and any bubbles in the glass bottle),go to a nice resturant and pay the waiter a $15 corkage fee, tell a hobo you'll split it with him if he can open it,stick it in your pants and get a working girl to suck it out, ok I hit the bottom with that one but if I think of any more I'll get back to you!!!!!

I went to France this past summer and went to two different vineyards. One explained that for some of their wine they use a plastic cork because the wine is not meant to be kept forever, it is meant to be enjoyed within 2 years.

'Waiter's Friends' are fine providing you get it in straight the first time, otherwise it is hard to recover. The 'rabbit' corkscrews are known as 'Lever-Arm' corkscrews and majority of the time will go in straight the first time. They are designed so that they go in in the center of the cork. Will work everytime. I have one that cost me £25, which comes with 4 different accessories, I will not go back to using any other corkscrews!
