If you have just had the kitten neutered, say within the past week, then the female is probably still smelling the vet's office and all the animals there on the kitten. That is always a good reason for the two to fight. For some reason, it seems to bring out the worst in all the animals in the house.
If it has been a while, then I think what everyone else has said is true - the two of them are trying to determine who is dominant.
However, they may also be playing. They boy will play harder, he's male, and the female may be protesting. If there isn't fur flying, it may just be play.
If it is distressing, you may want to separate them except for the times you can supervise. When you do supervise, have a squirt gun and towel handy. If they start to fight, use the squirt gun. If that doesn't stop them, throw the towel over one of them and separate them for a while to calm down. It may take a while doing this, but they will get the idea.
Good luck!

I've heard that cats become meaner after being spayed, neutered or de-clawed but I have three cats who are all spayed, neutered and declawed and I have never experienced those types of problems.
My cats playfully fight and occasionally make weird growling and/or hissing noises at each other but they aren't physically hurting each other.
My male cat used to be rough with the female cat but I don't think he realized he was hurting her. And then the vet said if he was hurting her, she would run away to avoid confrontation.
As long as they aren't drawing blood and ripping out each others fur, there's no reason to worry, it's just normal cat play.

has your female cat been done, if not then they will fight normally the female will start it, my female cat is alwaya having a go at my two toms they have both been done but she hasnt. juust by watching them ive worked out it has something to do with the time of year when shes in season it gets worse, when shes pregnant she will find any excuse to have a go at them, but once the kittens are born and have gone to good homes shes fine untill the next time of the tear.

Once they have determined who is the Boss they will settle down, but don't hold your breath! Its a natural thing for all animals to find a "pecking" order.

they are fighting over who is the more dominant cat in the house, our dogs did it years ago, but after a few years, they'll put their differences aside!
